I've also played in tech games where getting hit with a bullet doesn't
do 1d10 points of damage, it kills you. One hit and your out. This doesn't
lead to any feelings of helplessness and doesn't require increases in
power levels. It requires a total rethink on the way you play. The direct
approach is kind of out. And you are always looking for an ambush instead
of partying through the woods drinking and playing cards.

In AQ there is almost nothing that can kill a person in one round without
the GM getting munckiny (ie a mass of 8 year olds who all minibolt you at
once... humorous, but munchkiny). The best of the best would be a luck
assisted assassination or some 6d6 or die spells. Neither are guarenteed
(though a luck assisted 6d6 or die is a pretty safe bet). Because of this
we don't walk through life paranoid. Adventurers walk like giants.
