There's immaterial... and then there's _IMMATERIAL_. If you can
see it without the use of magic its only mostly immaterial. Its
still capable of seeing and being seen... And very probably capable
of hearing and of being heard. However it is immaterial enough not
to be able to feel or be felt :) Immaterial and Ethereal creatures
are still in sync with magic (elemental and divine) and with Time
(cannot penetrate a Type I/II blue field).

The higher level immaterial spell of Rudri _IS_ defense against
Divine Word. However lesser immaterial creatures (and ethereal
creatures) are still effected.
