Ok, I think that makes a resounding 'NIX' to the attunement idea.
It is apparently highly non-Scottish.
Here's how it should be:
In order to recieve the appropriate benefits of a Matrix Gem, it must be
touching your skin. When it is no longer touching your skin, you no
longer have those benefits. If you touch a Matrix Gem that is not
appropriate to your background, you take 3d6 of damage for every round
that you are touching that gem.
