I think teresium being a channeling-inhibitor rather than a unit drainer is a
much better precept.  Having something out there that can just suck away your
units 25 at a time is a heinous ounce of rock.  Especially since it should be
so plentiful due to the tremendous amount of magic items and incants floating
around.  It makes more sense in the interest of balance for it to just inhibit
the mage's ability to draw elemental power through himself.  Matrix gems just
allow you to channel more energy per day than would normally be possible.
