You can't 'over crank a crossbow'. The string is drawn back into a
holding notch and released by a trigger. Also why crossbows rule, they
can be held with little difficulty and allow for better aiming. You could
may be get better range for better firing angles, but how much is the
question.

As far as the ranges go, again, I'm not real particular if someone can
come up with better published versions than I dug up. I do like John's
idea, but I would like to see it play tested first to see how smooth
it flows in combat.
