Its a pretty important question. Instead of asking the question the
mage instead describes what he wants to do and you say 4d6 -vs- your
targeting skill.

Sure. But the board is not used everytime. Other GMs aren't as
specific and even then I've guessed wrong a few times.

It really can't be left up to the player. We, as moderators, are the
only exact image the player has of the world they are playing in. We
describe the world to them. If we do a good job most players will have
a relative idea of their placement in regards to everyone else. Certainly
the whiteboard helps. Occasionally an action will be performed where
rough placement isn't good enough and more detail needs to be thrown in.

I think Orion was being a bit facetious. He wasn't calling any specific
person a dickhead. He was expressing his frustration.
