grapple proposal

Grapple Proposal

Like some others, I have felt that in the past the grapple system in this
system is a little bit inaccurate. It does not allow any incarnation of the
grapplers or the targets strength to take affect the situation (except in the
case of exceptionals…but I'll take that into account later). I would like to
propose a new system that another group of people that have played AQ have
used successfully for some years.

New System

Under this new system, when attempting to break a grapple, the character
grappling and the character being grappled divide their respective Strength
attributes by three. They then each roll a number of dice equal to the
quotient of that equation. Whoever has the higher total wins the grappling
contest. Wrestling skill and exceptional statistics will also be taken into
account by adding or subtracting the appropriate number of dice. This reads a
bit funny for me, so I'll give some examples.

Situation 1:
Bob marine (STR 15) successfully grapples Jose the Intergalactic Mountain of
Power (STR 8). The next round, they each divide their respective STR totals
by three. This means Bob has a 5 and Jose has a 2. Bob rolls 5d6 and gets a
25. Jose rolls his pathetic 2d6 and gets an 8. This means Bob successfully
holds on to the mage (with such a tremendous success, Bob probably squeezes
Jose hard enough to send his head flying off like the cork from a champagne
bottle).

Situation 2:
Exact same as above situation, except this time we'll give Jose an exceptional
STR of 1. Jose gets to add 1d6 to the dice he rolls resulting in a total of
3d6. Bob rolls his 5 dice and Jose rolls his three. Bob gets a 20. Jose
gets a 4. Same result as above.

Situation 3:
Now we'll give Bob a Wrestling Skill of 8. We'll say he makes a successful
2d6 check to "Pin" Jose. Now he gets to add 2d6 to his total when Jose
attempts to break grapple, resulting in a total of 7d6. I think you can guess
the result.

There it is. Chew it up.
