We ran it this way for _YEARS_. Wasn't until we started using blue-field
materials to build stuff that Dan decided a change was in order. So he
made them unmovable. Then he made them immaterial also. I think Dana Shea
was one of the first to have a bunch of hamsters with little necklaces of
deferred spells. No one thought much of it then. But that was then and we
fear power now.
Yes, I agree that my opinions leave this totally available again in an
easy fashion. Its available now just not in an easy fashion. I can get
around it and anyone who puts some forethought into the matter can also
get around it. I believe Joe does on a regular basis.
Also the creation of these BFs is a lot more complex than you let on.
What does it take to create an item of fireball by this method?
8 units for the actual fireball
8 units for the defer for the fireball (assume thought trigger)
6 units for the BF
6 units for the BF defer (it has to be deferred or you'd need the original
earth mage to release the field)..
so 28 units per. How many of these do you think you can cast how
quickly? And this takes a goodly mage to pull it off... and cooperation
if your enmassing as well.
Or you can just leave it relative to Jaern and make earth mages the
most lethal part of ship combat. Forget about marines and their stupid
dolphins. Two ships closing on one another. My archer uses one of those
funky long range bows and some bow skill to put an arrow (with a deferred
area of effect blue field) onto your deck. The boat is too big to be
blue fielded but everything (and everyone) else within the area of effect
gets it and stays put while their boat continues forward. Mmmm... maybe
their archer lives through it and tosses one back. Even more yummm... is
this the way you envision ship combat? Hope so because it _WILL_ be the
standard only pirates will hit you at night from out of the dark where
you can't shoot back.
Argue that it doesn't happen now and I'll argue back that its because the
idea wasn't out there. It is now and it _will_ be used by players and GMs
alike.
I'm personally a really big fan of old type 1 blue fields. I think those
where were it was really at and I've never really understood why they
changed. I guess a couple of people got real vocal and overruled the
majority.
