What may have led up to this confusion is the fact that after the
re-write,
they are easier to digest then before, and that I am pretty sure I said I
would not (and never generally do) 'go after' to change the ones that
already existed. Also, in character, no one EVER starts out being brought
up as a Priest of Rudri, being taught that as a background and buying the
skills at base cost. Hirudo's are given the dark gift later in life after
they have acquired their early knowledge and training. (BTW children as
hirudo are pretty vulnerable, and would have a low survival change...
even
if this happens, they have not yet acquired a background and buy
EVERYTHING
at triple cost)
The upshot here is that it does not even make since for an adventurer to
start out as a Hirudo. If their adventuring life is supposed to represent
the significant events of their lifetime, we generally accept they have
done nothing significant before they are played (and thus have earned no
extra experience or gained any additional skills/abilities beyond their
training). So, regardless of our feelings on this subject, it does not
make
sense to start out as a Hirudo.

I believe that everyone agrees with you about Hirudo not starting
out that way. I believe Steve's Hirudo write up specifically states
that Hirudo will always buy Hirudo and priestly stuff at 3X because
a character can never start that way (just like you said no children
Hirudo).
Additionally since it takes quite a chuck of XP for a player character
to make another Hirudo (they just lose this XP no real gain for the
person making one), it will be a rare occurrence for a player Hirudo to
make another (take competition and all into this as well).
Basically, because of these limitations I thought everyone agreed that
they would be "allowed" character types in the sense that the stigma
of being on (player to player) no longer existed as so and so is just
blah
GM's favorite. Once they are allowed (using the restrictions in the
write
up ) players can stop being snippy to other players. Additionally making
them "legal" will hopefully force some unnamed GM's to actually READ
the new write up instead of making side crack comments about a
write up they haven't even really read.
