Perhaps I missed something. We had a GM meeting at Dan's house
several months ago where we boted on several topics (hirudo as
player characters, material bonuses for weapons, etc...). The vote
was a very definitive Hirudo are ok as player characters if the rules
are changed as per the writeup I mailed around. My memory may be
shoddy but I remember Dan saying at the time something similar
to "with those changes I don't have a problem with that".

There have been several Hirudo in play. Eric Starky played one in the
Sylvan Isles for quite a while. My adventurer spent several real months
tracking down a Hirudo and convincing it to make me one, Dan ran the
game where it happened. Sean McLane played a Hirudo for a while and I
think most recently Preston Wiley played a Hirudo when my Hirudo character
cast ordination.
You _CANNOT_ start as a Hirudo. The above people are really the only
people I know that sought to be come Hirudo and succeeded. Hirudo
spells are always purchased at base 900 and they are not even a bit
unbalancing anymore. Read the new errata. Despite Andy's claim to there
only being one change there are at least a dozen.
