Right. And changing the actual wording of the skill to reflect a 1d6 of
damage off for every die you make ends up costing about the same. In fact
it actually provides _less_ coverage in most instances than buying it up
(for you Joel). For most falls, I'd rely on the default. However if you
are often involved in activities where a fall from 20-30 feet is a pretty
common occurance, buy the skill... buy lots.
And thats true with pretty much all skills even in the real world. Most
people don't actually need a skill unless its something they will be
doing a lot or doing deeply. I can't iceskate (no skill) but I can stand
up and move around the rink without falling more than 3-4 times an
hour. Sometimes even manage a turn. This is pure default mode.
Currently a skill of 6 takes off 6 points of damage. With a die roll a
skill of six would also guarentee that you get to roll 1d6 and maybe
take of 6 points. Or you could try for two dice and if successful (about
42% chance) you could take of 2-12 points depending on your roll (average
at 7).
A roll introduces variability and the ever amusing chance at failure. I'd
recommend changing the working of the skill not its defaultability.
Tumbling
Stat: AGI
DEF : 2
Tumbling allows an adventurer to reduce the damage taken during a fall.
For every d6 rolled under the skill level, reduce the damage from the
fall by 1d6.
