Are you implying that the rookie gets a d20 on everyone in the group
until he hits someone? Not. After the first roll he may get a random
person and roll d20 on them... but that roll isn't against a group its
against an individual and hence the loop becomes broken. Also on that
roll his MM wouldn't come into play so his crit may just be a hit (if
it hits at all which it won't 90% of the time in your former example).
