As for magic pencils..I think some players are just plain stupid...or
"mathematically challenged" in a more 90s way.

For example, someone not great at math (and you don't HAVE to
be to get into Purdue..as evidenced by an x girlfriend's 820
on her SAT (total)...after her fourth try).....may assume that
to buy ..say...longsword from 4 to 7 it just costs 7 x 360 experience.
..that person would forget about the 5th rank and 6th rank.

Now, you think "so why not buy from 0 to 7 instead of 0 to 4
to 7 instead under this system?"

Well, this same mathematically challenged person wouldn't
think of that.

Worse pencil I've ever seen (besides the one case of an all quarter
breed with at least 4 18s that Dan verbally reprimanded) was
a rating 60+ adventurer that averaged around 3900 xp per
rate.

I made up a little quiz at one time to test players' rules knowledge.....
about 5 or 6 questions on buying up skills, buying up spells, and
calculating DVs.

Example question:

Rogar the Rogue wants to buy longsword skill. It is currently
at 3. What's the cost to buy it from 3 to 6? Longsword
is a base 360 warrior skill.

??????????

ps...and the hardest question was for Karin the warrior/fire mage
to buy dimensions from 1 to 2.
