Agreed...it makes more sense now that I think about it .
Steve's right...in ways. Putting a exps per skill per adveture cap will slow
progression in the same way giving less exps will, but will also encourage skill
diversity. i.e. I get 2500 exps and can only spend 1000 exps on a given skill.
However, rather than screaming up to fireball (glassblowing in my case)
immediately I chunk 1k into that pool...and sit and stare at the other 1500...I
bet I spend it on another skill...through this diversity is encouraged.
Ppl spend eeps differently depending on how they get them...the bolus received at
the end of a long period of study are almost always spent in an entirely different
fashion than the week-to-week eps, as we as Americans are much more into the quick
fix than waiting for something (if you disagree, check the average American credit
card debt). I know from experience that when you get 10k+ exps at once you think
differently about it. My weapon skill w/ Tamboura is from such a bolus...I don't
think I've the patience to save and skimp for 2-3 adventures to buy a -point- of
Spear...but when I get it all at once and can buy five ranks or so? Hell, why
not...immediate gratification. (shrug)
Point being, a max exps spendible per skill over time would be nice to encourage
said diversity...it won't prevent the dedicated Mage from getting his greatsword
skill up, but will make the average character become less one-dimensional (with
respect to skills/focus). I don't suggest tossing Mike's idea, I suggest
encorporating it. If swimming is 20(5) and spellcasting is 300(1), just make that
()'d value a multiplier of something else...and this might be a good time to
evaluate the exp of certain skills...if it's insane to become Hemigway in a day,
maybe Writing should cost more...
