Name possiblities
I wrote this up last night, a general theme for how the various races
name themselves and their children. Granted adventurers might not
use these names to identify themselves, but it does add a bit more
depth to what it means to be of a certain race. Let me know
what ya think.
General cultural notes:
Names:
Elven names. The elven naming system of Geleia is
very heavily influenced by their strong sense of
tradition. They consider personal family and
clan/house to be very important as part of their
identity.
An example of an elven name:
Jallen Sunchaser Serrett
<Given> <family> <clan>
Dwarven names. Dwarves are more independantly and ruggedly
individuallistic by nature, and their name structure
and traditions reflect this. At the age of majority,
young dwarves will choose a name for themselves as
part of their real name, this chosen name may change
with time, but it is almost always a personal
identification marker for the dwarf. Dwarves also
consider their family and clan to be of importance,
and so they end their name with a hyphonated name
that combines their family and clan.
Examples of dwarven names:
Burlach Skullbuster Barthan-Blackmore
<Given> <chosen> <family-clan>
Dulin Stonesculpter Targen-Bracken
<given> <chosen> <family-clan>
Human names. The naming tradition amoung humans places
more emphasis on the family and self. Only when
it is a formal introduction or occasion will they
include the name of their clan.
An example of a human name:
Sandar Jarrat : Informal
<given><family>
Sandar Jarrat of Clan Wyl: Formal
<given><family <clan>
Lizard names. Lizards have two names often. A
"Real Name", and a "Surface name." The real name
will be unpronouncable in any surface language,
since it will be in underwater Sellict. This name
is often much more descriptive than the few word
names of the surface races.
The surface names are simply chosen by the lizard
for use, or possibly some old nickname given by
others.
Example of Lizard Real names:
"White wave cresting in the surf."
"He who swims without fear."
"The rock that breaks all waves."
Example of Lizard surface names:
"White Wave"
"wave breaker"
Orcan names.
Orcs live very short lives, and their lives are
often very driven, so that they generally have
little sense of tradition or family, or really
care for such. When such is done however, it is
almost always done with something as "<name>, Son
of <parent>". Young orcs are given a name at
birth, and they keep this name until they come
of age. At that point they choose a name for
themselves, and if they have proven themselves
as adults to the other members of the tribe, that
name will be accepted and used.
