The Island of Filgren

This island was introduced in my last adventure, and is free for any GM to
use. Feel free to add, and please post any additions to the list. Enjoy, and
try not to destroy it too bad :)

The Island of Filgren

Four weeks travel to the east of Rougtero is the island of Filgren. It is a
decent-sized volcanic island that is home to 5000-7000 people. Previous
estimates of the population appear to have been grossly inaccurate, as some
were told barely 1500 people were on the island.

This population boom is due to the recent discovery of the spice the natives
call Eurynthum (ya -RINTH-um). Found only on Filgren, the spice has spread
quickly to many nearby islands and is beginning to turn Filgren into the
head of a major trade route.

Features of Filgren:

The Sea & Shore Tavern - The first tavern in sight off the docks, which are
at the southernmost point on the island. Known for its absolutely putrid
food at incredibly cheap prices. An adventurer can drink the piss-poor beer
here all night for a single silver coin, plus receive a horrid home-cooked
meal and still get change back.

The Merchant's Area - A large area inland where all the trading in the city
is done. This area is walled, and has only one entrance and exit. There are
numerous, well-armed guards posted here. The area is basically one long
rectangle, with the short sides running north to south and the long sides
running east - west. The entrance/exit is in the west. As a result, the
goods that are the least expensive are in the west and gradually get more
expensive until you reach the Eurynthum traders in the far eastern end of
the market.

The "High Class" neighborhood - This is where the rich of city (minus the
merchants) live. It is in the northern end of the city, where the land
starts to slope up onto the volcano. Consequently, this area provides some
excellent views as it looks down on the entire town and out into the ocean.

The Spice

Eurynthum is a spice that is mined, running in veins that build up under the
volcano. The mines are family organizations, with the head of the family
usually being the trader who takes the spice to market. The spice itself
adds a musty-sweet flavor to anything it is added to, and provides a slight,
pleasant burning sensation as it is ingested (not unlike alcohol). The spice
is extremely expensive when uncut, on the order of 3 ounces for one platinum
trade bar.

People of Filgren:

Darren and Damien Francisco - a father and son team, Darren is in early
middle age and Damien is approximately eight years old. Darren sells, by his
own admission, only the best spice. He never cuts the spice, and truly sells
the purest that is available. His family hit a large vein of spice several
months ago and he is still adjusting to his new found prosperity. Due to the
high cost of his spice, there are rarely lines at Darren's booth, and his
son Damien spends a great deal of his time trying to find potential
customers for his father. Darren is genuinely nice and sincerely honest, and
gets greatly insulted by any accusation that he would ever introduce
impurities into his spice.

Griff - Another merchant, Griff is known for his ultra-low cost, ultra-low
quality Eurynthum. He will gladly sell three pounds of his spice for one
hundred silver coins. Griff is oily and unlikable, and lives to perfect his
sales pitch.

Grof Nettles - Until very recently, Grof was the hero of the small island, a
wealthy man and a philanthropist. Any citizen of Filgren can tell you of the
time that Grof financed the rebuilding of the town after a mage lost control
of group of fire elementals. Many also have very personal stories of
friendship as well. One of Darren Francisco's fondest memories is the time
that Grof visited his stand and actually shook his hand. Grof was recently
found dead in his study, and the island is in mourning.

Velan - Grof's personal secretary. Totally devoted to Grof, he was
devastated when Grof was murdered. He was equally surprised to learn that
Grof had made him the beneficiary of a large portion of his fortune. Velan
has vowed to continue Grof's good works, and has begun by starting a
foundation for orphan children. Velan has also vowed to find his friend's
killers, and has put out a bounty on them.

The Bounty

Velan of Filgren has placed a bounty on the trader Pwyll, and his assistants
Miza and Talve. He would recognize them on sight, and has provided adequate
description of them to everyone on the island. If these three are brought in
alive, Velan is willing to pay 10,000 silver. Dead, they are worth 1,000
silver. Turning in only one or two corresponds in a proportionately smaller
reward. News of this bounty has not yet reached Rougtero.
