As far as the swimming in plate it is only a +1d6 check and then the
-2d6 for the gills.

The ability to breath underwater keeps you from drowning. It does not
prevent suffication if you end up in a non-aerated body of liquid.

Standard swimming check as per the Skill description is 1d6.
