There have also been rocket powered gliders, and there was a big water clock
on top of the big screw, I believe. I may be mistaken about its location,
but there was a clock thower in old Karfelon. The Hippodrome also had means
to fill it with water, then drain it again. 

Wasn't it one of the gigantic pumps that was blown up with a nuke to 
flood the lower 2/3 of Lojem? The water was pumped out of that area behind
the seawall to create the larger area. Building the seawal was no mean 
engineering feat either. There were also locks which pumped water 
to raise or lower boats coming to or from Karfelon.

Lots of examples of engineering.
